The kemençe is a name used to designate various types of stringed and bowed musical instruments having their origin in the Eastern Mediterranean, in particular in Armenia, Greece, Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan and the regions adjacent to the black Sea. These instruments are three-stringed instruments and played held upright. The name Kemençe derives from the Persian Kamancheh and simply means "little bow".
