Oud

The oud is an iconic plucked string instrument, widely used throughout the Arab world and beyond.

Its name comes from the Arabic al-ʿūd, meaning “the wood”, a term that later evolved in Europe into lute, highlighting the oud’s major influence on the history of Western string instruments.

As the quintessential solo instrument of Arabic music, the oud is known for its expressive depth, rich tone, and emotional melodic character.

Within instrumental ensembles, it can also serve as a melodic or rhythmic bass, providing structure, warmth, and balance to the overall sound.
