Qanun

The qanun, also spelled kanoun, kanun, or qanoun, is a plucked string instrument belonging to the family of table zithers, widely used throughout the Middle East, as well as in Greece, Iran, Armenia, and Central Asia.

A key instrument of Arab-Turkish classical music, the qanun is renowned for its sonic richness, microtonal precision, and the complexity of its playing technique. It is also featured in contemporary contexts, including film music and modern ensembles.

Played resting on a stand or on the musician’s knees, the qanun is performed using plectra (mezrab) attached to the index fingers, allowing for a highly expressive and nuanced sound palette.

Versatile in nature, it can be played solo, accompany a singer, a percussionist, or be fully integrated into an instrumental ensemble.
